SHEA

"Dead?" I yanked my hand away from him and stopped short. "How do you know?"

Lucas tugged me along. "Not here."

"What happened?" I whisper-yelled.

"We don't know yet."

"But you know he's dead. How could you know that?"

"It pays to stay ahead of the news."

His answer made no sense, but maybe he had an in with people in the know. Instead of asking him to clarify, I followed along, eager to see where he was going.

We stopped between buildings, and I snagged his arm. "But how do you know if the rest of the pack just found out?"

"Because he was laid out on Axel's porch, and I just went to talk to Axel."

"But Axel went on the hunt."

"Did he tell you that?" Lucas spat the question at me.

"Why are you mad?"

"Because you haven't been entirely honest with me." He stopped short and whirled to face me. "Why did Axel let you stay here? Why did he let you live here?"

"I don't know," I stammered.

"I think you do know." Then he dragged me to Axel's cabin and into the gathering crowd. "Explain."

My mouth opened and closed. "Here?"

Lucas glared.

"I d-don't know," I sputtered, hating that he was forcing this issue out in the open. "I see a wolf, a girl wolf—I mean, a female—in my head whenever he's around. That's all I know."

Lucas evaluated me. "You already know what happened to Theo," he said.

Before I could argue, a group of shifters left the porch and surrounded us. They each wore a mask of hate and had their teeth bared. They shuffled me up onto the porch, and Lucas disappeared from my side. I immediately missed his reassuring warmth. They shoved me toward the middle of the steps. Another crowd collected at the bottom of the stairs.

"It's her," one of them snapped. "It didn't happen until she showed up."

"She killed the alpha's father," somebody in the other crowd yelled.

A large man I didn't recognize took position between me and the mob. He had long, fiery red sideburns sticking out from the sides of his face. He turned to me and the light in his beard hair gave him a reddish glow. "I'm Warden."

"It's her. She's the reason Theo is dead," another agreed. "Let's punish her. It is the right of the pack. Justice while the alpha is gone."

"Not until her guilt is determined," Warden barked.

"She has no loyalty," somebody muttered.

"The lone wolf trains her," another yelled.

Frowning, I searched the faces for Lucas, but he'd disappeared. What did they mean by lone wolf? The term meant so much more to them than it meant to me. It had a depth I didn't understand. I lacked so much knowledge of shifter traditions and culture, and it made this whole thing that much harder. I didn't know whether to make my case or shove my way out of the gathering crowd.

"When did Theo die?" Warden demanded.

"Not long ago," another wolf I didn't know answered. Maybe one of Axel's guards. "Sometime this morning. The scent of decomposition isn't strong enough to indicate that it's been hours.
